Payments

What is Payment posting?

Applying payer payments and adjustments to the correct claims and moving the remaining balance to the right responsible party.

Also known as
cash posting · ERA posting · auto-posting

Definition

Payment posting is where remittance data becomes accounting reality: the payment lands on the claim, the contractual adjustment is written off, and the residual balance moves to the secondary payer or the patient. Done from an ERA it is largely automatic; done from paper it is manual re-keying.

Posting quality determines the quality of everything downstream. If contractual adjustments get posted as patient balances, patients are billed for amounts they do not owe. If denials post as zero-payments without their reason codes, denial reporting shows a hole where the actionable work should be.

Why it matters

Posting is the last point at which denial detail is captured. Detail dropped here cannot be recovered from anywhere else without reopening the original remittance.
